Effects of Alcohol

MARCH EVENTS

During the last week of February and moving onto March our 6th grade students are finishing instruction about alcohol and learning the facts about the 2008 and 2009 survey conducted by the University of Michigan detailing how many 8th graders have used alcohol in the last 30 days. The students were surprised to find that the percent was less than 15% in 2009 down from 16% in 2008.

In the coming month the student will learn the dangers of Methamphetamines and inhalants. We will then finish the month by talking about who are our support people and about friendship foundations.

DARE

The San Luis Obispo Police Department has been dedicated to se
rving the community through DARE for over 15 years and this school year will be teaching in six San Luis Obispo Coastal Unified School District Elementary Schools within our city.

This year the D.A.R.E. program will be taught at Pacheco, Hawthorne schools during the first half of the school year and at Bishop’s Peak, Teach and C.L. Smith and Sinsheimer schools during the second half.

Parent support is encouraged and is an important part of our
program. D.A.R.E. is a tool parents can use to open
discussion about the importance of staying drug-free.

In order to complete the program and graduate a student must:
-Complete a D.A.R.E. workbook
-Have good attendance and demonstrate good behavior during class
-Write an essay to express what they have learned in the D.AR.E. program
-Stay drug-free

After the successful completion of the program a graduation
ceremony will be scheduled at their school and all parents
are encouraged to attend and support their child.

If you have any questions feel free to call our DARE Officer
Alison Martinez at (805) 594-8044 or email her at
